Afternoon Session (1:15 PM – 2:30 PM)
Innovations in Extremely Low Income Housing
Workshop Summary
In California, nearly 90% of the state’s nearly 2.4 million ELI (extremely low income) residents are cost-burdened, meaning that the high cost of housing leaves them struggling to secure basic needs like food, transportation, and health care. Systemic failures, such as the lack of housing production, increase the risk of homelessness for this housing insecure population. To meet the housing demands of ELI households would require the construction of substantially more affordable housing. However, in the past decade developers built approximately 20,000 units affordable for ELI households, a stark contrast to the 530,000 units needed. What are leaders in the industry doing to catalyze ELI housing?
