Meet and welcome one of our newest members, Sonia Aldape! Learn why Sonia decided to become an HLC member.
Question: What inspired you to become a member of HLC?
Answer: As a person who was raised in low-income housing and as a mental health therapist, I am deeply aware of the harrowing effects that lack of basic needs, such as housing, has on people, their families and communities’ health, livelihood and wellbeing. I truly believe shelter is a basic human right. It is no secret that housing prices are ridiculous in this county and as someone who both struggled to find a place I could afford in this county and as a witness to the plight of homeless individuals everyday, I couldn’t be more pleased that HLC exists and is actively working to address the issue.
Q: When and how did you get involved with the organization?
A: After moving to the area, only a couple of months ago from the East Bay, I felt compelled to be a part of any initiatives working towards increasing affordable housing. I deliberately did my research knowing that affordable housing was so limited and diminishing in this county and so, I was pleasantly surprised to find an organized group such as HLC doing the work I hoped for. I contacted HLC right away and signed up to be a member. Next, I look forward to my involvement in any actions and events that I can partake in to increase and protect affordable housing.
Q: What do you hope HLC will achieve in the near future?
A: I want to see more affordable housing and protections for renters of all incomes, in the area. I most hope to see HLC expand their advocacy towards legislation that supports rent control and protects low-income renters from evictions.
Q: Are there other causes that you feel particularly strong about?
A: Yes, I feel strongly about many issues in our society. I hope for a society that is more empathic, socially just and that cares to be accountability for any harm to its’ communities and the environment.
Q: Do you have any other comments you would like to share?
A: Am looking forward to expanding my education of housing advocacy and local legislation, supporting and working alongside you all towards this vital need in our community!
Thank you for your support Sonia- we look forward to continue working with you!
