Member Profiles- Nathan Chan HLC members share why they got involved

Nathan Chan

Meet Nathan! Learn how he got involved with HLC and why housing affordability is important to him.

Question: What inspired you to become a member of HLC?

Answer: Leora reached out to me around the time that the Gateway at Millbrae hearings were taking place. I had been looking to get more involved with housing activism as it became clear that costs were spiraling out of control and we wouldn’t solve California’s carbon emissions without more urban infill.

Q: When and how did you get involved with the organization?

A: I think my first donation was some time last year, and I’ve mostly participated in the happy hours hosted by HLC. I remember my first event was the 90s party to raise money for the potential San Mateo height limits measure.

Q: What do you hope HLC will achieve in the near future?

A: I hope more elected officials cite the work of HLC when they vote more increasing housing the peninsula and starting to balance out our extreme jobs-housing imbalance.

Q: Are there other causes that you feel particularly strong about?

A: I see the housing struggle as being directly tied to the climate struggle. I’ve been involved with CCL and Indivisible in the past to see more progress on this front, but it seems like the local level is our best chance for action until after 2020.

Q: Do you have any other comments you would like to share?

Keep up the great work!
